PROCESSES

Weaving is only one process involved in creating a Rhian Wyman Design product.

Below are a selection of short videos capturing more of the processes behind the product. I have missed out designing, sampling and focused more on the production.

Warp Winding

Warp Winding

Before I am able to weave I have to set the loom up. The first process is to wind the warp. Here I take a single thread from the cone and measure it a set length. I then repeat this process till there are enough thread ends to cover the width of the loom. The standard amount of ends per warp is around 1200.

The warp is evenly spread out on the raddle. This helps create an even tension whilst the warp is wound on to the back beam.

The raddle is secured with thread before the warp is wound on to the beam.

Here I wind the tensioned warp on to the back beam.

When winding the warp on to the back beam the warp needs to be tensioned. I achieve this by tying kettlebells to the warp.

Once the warp is wound on to the back beam and the cross sticks have been put in place, each piece of yarn is thread through its own heddle.

Once the warp ends have been thread through the heddles they are then evenly grouped and threaded through the reed.

The yarn used in the studio arrives on cones. This is a fast video of a cone whilst a bobbin is being wound.

Here I transfer the yarn from the cone on to a bobbin.

Bobbins are loaded in to the shuttle to weave the weft.

Weaving the throw. I have two pedals, one that lifts the shafts and the other changes the pattern chain.

Once a throw is woven it gets cut off the loom.
Washing

Washing

Once the throws have come off the loom and been quality checked they are washed using the traditional stomping technique. This removes the lanolin and dust that has been gathered during in the spinning process.
The Tenter Frame

Once the throw has been washed, it is stretched out on the tenter frame to dry.

When the throw is dry it is taken off the tenter frame.

Once the throw is dry, it is quality checked for the second time and the fringes are cut.
